EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
2004 – Date       Unilever Plc

Scientist – Environmental Sustainability- Unilever Research & Development, Colworth, UK

Working as part of the Global Eco Efficiency and Sustainability team, I am involved in the development and delivery of practical solutions and best practice documentation for the management Supply Chain environmental issues in utility areas of Waste, Water, and CO2/Energy. I gather environmental data, interpret it and design & facilitate strategic improvement programs for different geographical regions and manufacturing sites. The data is used in Life Cycle Assessments, initiating Cooperate Responsibility Programs and Sustainability Reporting. I lead sustainability programs at global and regional level.

Special Achievements

I have used environmental data to design and produce strategic improvement programs in Europe, Asia and Africa. This has included interactive training materials to communicate best practice and delivered them through environmental workshops & conferences. I have designed and successfully lead collaborative projects in Waste (Africa) – 30% waste reduction between 2005/06, Water (South America) - 1 million liters of water saved in 2004/05 and Energy (Europe) – 5% Energy reduction 2008.

I provided specific specialist strategic influencing in these geographical regions to ensure that the local management and teams were fully aware of the benefits to be accrued, their responsibilities and need to engage fully. These regions have different cultures and my diplomatic approach to each situation helped deliver each of the projects on time and in full. I lead and monitored each of these projects centrally in a collaborative manner from our offices in the UK with minimum travel to the regions.

2001 – 2004      Unilever Plc

Factory Manager - Unilever East and Southern Africa.

My role involved production planning and scheduling, ensuring quality, quantity, machine & people operational efficiency, yields accountability and process cost effectiveness. I developed the best talent out of people to implement the business’ manufacturing strategy with regard to application of new technologies and step changes. I was involved in inter company transfer sourcing strategies in 2003 /04 and developing 3rd party manufacturers for our non core brands in Southern Africa.

 Special Achievements

I chaired the steering committee that introduced and implemented Total Productive Manufacturing (TPM) and ISO 9000 for the first time in Unilever Kenya. I led the introduction and implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and Quality Management System (QMS) that led to certification with ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 as well as OHSA 18001. This was achieved through my Science and Technology expertise while managing and developing human talent capabilities.

2000 - 2001       Unilever Plc
Factory Relocation Project Manager- Unilever Kenya Ltd

This role involved the closure of a key personal care products factory, relocation of the manufacturing equipment and cross border sourcing of products while maintaining high levels of health and safety.

 Special Achievements

I coordinated the construction of a new factory while overseeing the closer of the older one in 2000 / 2001. The project implementation cost was £4.5 million.  I monitored the delivery of key milestones in the project network ensuring a timely closure of the plant, relocation of manufacturing lines and a vertical start up. I implemented a successful Environmental Impact Assessment for the entire project. I presented to the board of directors on a monthly basis the project progress against plan, capital spending against allocation, and where changes were needed I had to convince the board for approval. I redirected and managed a big organizational and management structural change. This involved preparing employees emotionally for the final shut down and redundancy process while taking all sensitivities into consideration. I monitored the environmental impacts of the project and carried out continuous risk assessments and other safety studies during the life of the project. I was responsible for every financial aspects of the project and completion on time and vertical start up was key milestone.

1995 – 2000      Unilever Plc

Product Innovations Manager - East Africa Industries Ltd

As part of the global Research and Development Team, I was responsible for Product and Process formulation and development of Home and Personal Care products at the local level. I was responsible for constant improvement in quality and cost of formulations of new and existing products.

Achievements

In 1999 I implemented a key change in detergent manufacturing process where we changed sulphonic acid neutralization with soda ash (sodium carbonate) to in situ neutralization with sodium hydroxide. This project involved a complete change in manufacturing process and design with safety considerations due to the use of sodium hydroxide.  On completion, the company saved $100 dollars for every tone of product made, and improved quality. I was able to cut the turn around of the raw material deliveries by half, thus reducing the raw material stock holding in our warehouses by a similar 50%. I was awarded the employee of the year.
