It involved site visits and interviews with numerous stakeholders and the compilation of a final report to TDC which was submitted to International Organisation FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). January 2008 – May 2008 - Supervised Consultancy Project: Transformation within the MUTP project, Mumbai, India.

  • The Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) project is funded by the World Bank and is focused on improving the economic status of Mumbai through developing the railway system and also through the transformation of the lives of slum dwellers living within 30 feet of the railway lines in Mumbai. The project relocated and rehabilitated (R&R) an estimated 60,000 people in Mumbai. Our evaluation of the R&R consisted an analysis encompassed the economic, social and political aspects of the project.

  • Thorough preparation for the project was performed through evaluation of secondary data including policies and procedures of the city, state and international and national organisations involved in MUTP. Furthermore, in-depth dialogue and presentations took place with leading individuals and academics in the field. The field-work was a great learning opportunity as I held interviews with high ranking individuals such as the commissioner of the municipality development authority (MMRDA) and Senior State secretary for housing. Furthermore, the interviews allowed me to understand what and how to extract information from different actors ranging from politicians and think tanks to financial experts. Another aspect of the field work was to gain information from local people who had been affected by the project. This was especially challenging as it was important to differentiate between the different groupings among the community and gain their trust in a short time in order to get quality and relevant information quickly.

  • The project allowed us to put into action the leading tools to diagnose the situation and create strategies. Continuous diagnosis of the situation and intense work on strategies allowed us to complete the project within a short period of time. I had the opportunity to present our work through a presentation to the stakeholders and journalists in Mumbai and also present a report with the recommendations for the improvement of the project.

October 2007-January 2008 – Supervised Consultancy Project: Sustainable Development in Tower Hamlet, London.

  • The research project was focused on the perceptions of “sustainable communities” by the local community and by the policy makers. It required rigorous initial research, both primary and secondary data was used and techniques such as mapping and interviews applied in order to understand the spatial and human factors and design a feasible research framework.

  • The project provided valuable experience in designing research projects, this was with regard to not only framing appropriate questions but also in designing methodology to ensure that the information collected is comprehensive and accurate. Furthermore, the project increased my knowledge of research techniques and how to apply them with integrity.
